Independence Journal Newspaper

The Independence Journal Newspaper was started by a gentleman named William Arthur Gurley Jr. He was the owner, editor and publisher. Mr. Gurley at one time owned the Galax Gazette and the Floyd Press. He founded the Independence Journal in 1963. It lasted about 11 months. Mr. Gurley was a member of the Galax City Council, a Congressional aid to the late Rep. Dan Daniel and Executive Director of the Galax, Carroll, Grayson Chamber of Commerce. He established Galax’s first Farmers’ Market. He worked for the highway and bridge improvement and he was the initiator of the annual poor man’s dinner for state legislators at the Galax fiddlers convention. He passed away in 1993.
